6 Tips for Driving at Night in Broome County

1. MAKE SURE YOUR WINDSHIELD IS CLEAN.

It might not be a problem for you, but when it comes to nighttime driving, poor visibility can create hazards. A clean windshield will have absolutely no cracks or chips in the glass so that water can’t get caught between them and obscure your vision at night.

2. ADJUST YOUR BACKSEAT MIRRORS.

You may have adjusted your rear view mirror while sitting in the driver’s seat during daylight, but is that enough in the dark? You want to make sure that mirrors are adjusted for maximum visibility in the backseat. Check to see if you’re getting any glare off of nearby headlights by moving around slightly in your seat once you’re comfortably seated behind the wheel. If there isn’t a drastic difference or improvement after adjusting your mirrors, turn on your interior car light and check again.

3. TURN ON YOUR INTERIOR CAR LIGHT.

If you have a button to turn on your interior lights when it’s dark outside, don’t keep it turned off! Your headlights are there to help you see in front of the car, but what good does that do if you can’t even see yourself? When reviewing your rear view mirror for any obstructions or hazards behind you while driving at night, this comes in handy. Be sure not to leave the light on too long once all clear because it could irritate other drivers and make them drive erratically since they’ll be trying to figure out who is shining a bright beam at their face without warning; that might be you if you forget to turn off your interior light!

4. DON’T DRIVE TOO FAST.

It’s easy to think that driving fast at night is the only way to see, but it’s also one of the worst ways to drive. You should always avoid speeding because it ends up being hazardous for yourself and other drivers on the road. The faster your go, the less time you have to react if something comes into your lane or someone decides to suddenly stop for whatever reason. When you speed through life, bad things tend to happen… This isn’t just true at night however; just slow down in general! Driving 80 MPH doesn’t mean “driving better” so please watch out for other drivers as well as yourself!

5. PREPARE FOR POTHOLES AND OTHER HAZARDS.

Broome County roads occasionally has its potholes, so you shouldn’t try to swerve or avoid the obvious hazards that you see at night because it’ll just be more dangerous than usual! You can dodge a pothole if you’re quick enough, but don’t drive like an idiot thinking that nobody sees them when they want to avoid one; other drivers might not see your drastic shift in direction or speed! Instead, slow down when approaching known obstacles on the road and move over when possible… It will make your commute much safer.

6. PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR FOOTING IN THE CAR.

We’re not sure if people just don’t care or it’s a lack of common sense, but please do not have your high beams on while driving at night with the parking brake engaged! You will blind everyone around you and most likely cause an accident. In Binghamton, this is a very frustrating thing for other drivers to deal with because they can’t see anything easily even when their headlights are on! If someone near you is driving erratically or too close to your car, it might be because all they can see with those bright lights shining is a big shiny object in front of them that happens to be a vehicle! It causes accidents… Just turn off your brights and everything should work out fine.
